How will this role support our team?
The role of Counsel executes the College’s disciplinary process, representing the College in all stages of discipline proceedings (including prehearing conferences, disclosure exchanges, motions, and hearings), liaising with external counsel and facilitating settlement negotiations where appropriate.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
- Independently maintain a caseload of discipline, registrar appeal and fitness to practice matters, including cases before the Federal Court. Manage timelines to ensure all deadlines are met.
- Assist Lead Counsel and provide guidance to Associate Counsel with complex discipline
matters.
- Collaborate with Lead Counsel on issues related to the prioritization, strategy, and
management of discipline matters.
- Collaborate with investigators, advising on investigation strategy and reviewing
investigation reports.
- Prepare legal opinions for consideration by the Complaints Committee to recommend
next steps for handing a complaint.
- Identify and advise the Lead Counsel of the need for discipline, registrar appeal and
fitness to practice-related policy/procedure development and/or policy/procedure
change(s) based on analysis of legal issues encountered in discipline matters.
- With input from Lead Counsel, liaise with external counsel on complaints assigned to
external counsel to manage. Provide instructions and participate in
ongoing meetings to remain aware of case status and issues that have been
encountered.
- Coordinate with other staff to ensure compliance with agreements and orders.

internal and external stakeholders, build consensus, persuade, and influence
- Tact and discretion to work on confidential and sensitive matters
Required Education and Experience
- Law Degree (LL.B. or JD) and a license to practice in a Canadian province
- 5-7 years of litigation/prosecution experience gained through private legal practice or in
a regulatory environment
- Knowledge of prosecutorial standards and practice, professional regulation and
administrative law and the ability to acquire knowledge of the College Act, regulations,
By-laws, Code of Professional Conduct and Tribunal Committee Rules of Procedure
- Knowledge of the Federal Courts Act and Federal Court Rules
- Knowledge of dispute resolution and forensic investigation techniques
- Knowledge of office/administrative software
